I have never had a problem getting around in unfamiliar places, driving or riding public transportation. I sure couldn't do it now - or maybe I could, but wouldn't even try it any more. Good for you and I hope you found your right bus to get back!
Seattle conducted a social experiment for a number of years when they took the fares off the buses. It failed as the street people started sleeping on the buses.
