The white ones are obviously geese. I'm told now that the black and white ones are ducks. Not like any duck I've seen before.
They are pets of the local Post Commander. Mostly they are tame. I said in a previous post that one seemed to almost want to interact with me while I was playing with one of the cats that also have the run of the Post.
Strange looking but beautiful birds. Never saw a duck that looked like those.
ReplyDeleteThey look like Muscovy Ducks. Here's the Wikipedia link:
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscovy_Duck In my duck book it says they are actually a type of goose. Wikipedia calls them a duck through out the article, so who knows.
That thing has a face only a mother could love.
ReplyDeleteJudy, thanks for doing my research for me on the ducks. Yep, that's them. I am sad to see that they are considered an invasive species and wiki says that they can not be traded anymore. I find that hard to believe, as I remember various homesteading blogs commenting on their Muscovy ducks.
ReplyDeleteBen, you are correct. :)
You can still buy Muscovy ducks from any of the hatcheries in the USA that sell ducks. I think Wiki is a little wet with some of their information, but I will let the 'experts' hash that out.
